Probing Hadronic Structure with The Decay Ī”ā†’Nl+lāˆ’\Delta\rightarrow Nl^+l^-

We compute the branching ratio for Ī”ā†’Ne+eāˆ’\Delta\rightarrow Ne^+e^- and Ī”ā†’NĪ¼+Ī¼āˆ’\Delta\rightarrow N\mu^+\mu^- in chiral perturbation theory and find that both decays should be observable at CEBAF. With sufficiently low thresholds on the e+eāˆ’e^+e^- invariant mass a branching ratio of āˆ¼10āˆ’5\sim 10^{-5} may be observed for Ī”ā†’Ne+eāˆ’\Delta\rightarrow Ne^+e^-. For the Ī”ā†’NĪ¼+Ī¼āˆ’\Delta\rightarrow N\mu^+\mu^- decay mode we predict a branching ratio of 3Ɨ10āˆ’73\times 10^{-7}. The dependence of the M1 and E2 amplitudes on the momentum transfer will provide a useful test of chiral perturbation theory which predicts āˆ¼20%\sim 20\% variation over the allowed kinematic range.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, UCSD/PTH 93-06, QUSTH-93-02, Duke-TH-93-4

Online reflective diaries - using technology to strengthen the learning experience

Internet based technologies have benefits for students and staff in terms of time and information sharing. Students at the University of Glasgow were required to engage in reflective writing, with tutor support, as part of their course assessment. We examine the benefits of this approach in fostering a deep, holistic approach to learning, student contribution to course development through this reflection, and the issues in support of these activities

The density of mid-sized Kuiper belt objects from ALMA thermal observations

The densities of mid-sized Kuiper belt objects are a key constraint into understanding the assembly of objects in the outer solar system. These objects are critical for understanding the currently unexplained transition from the smallest Kuiper belt objects with densities lower than that of water to the largest objects with significant rock content. Mapping this transition is made difficult by the uncertainties in the diameters of these objects, which maps into an even larger uncertainty in volume and thus density. The substantial collecting area of the Atacama Large Millimeter Array allows significantly more precise measurements of thermal emission from outer solar system objects and could potentially greatly improve the density measurements. Here we use new thermal observations of four objects with satellites to explore the improvements possible with millimeter data. We find that effects due to effective emissivity at millimeter wavelengths make it difficult to use the millimeter data directly to find diameters and thus volumes for these bodies. In addition, we find that when including the effects of model uncertainty, the true uncertainties on the sizes of outer solar system objects measured with radiometry are likely larger than those previously published. Substantial improvement in object sizes will likely require precise occultation measurements.Comment: AJ, in pres

    Firmware Development Improves System Efficiency

Most manufacturing processes require physical pointwise positioning of the components or tools from one location to another. Typical mechanical systems utilize either stop-and-go or fixed feed-rate procession to accomplish the task. The first approach achieves positional accuracy but prolongs overall time and increases wear on the mechanical system. The second approach sustains the throughput but compromises positional accuracy. A computer firmware approach has been developed to optimize this point wise mechanism by utilizing programmable interrupt controls to synchronize engineering processes 'on the fly'. This principle has been implemented in an eddy current imaging system to demonstrate the improvement. Software programs were developed that enable a mechanical controller card to transmit interrupts to a system controller as a trigger signal to initiate an eddy current data acquisition routine. The advantages are: (1) optimized manufacturing processes, (2) increased throughput of the system, (3) improved positional accuracy, and (4) reduced wear and tear on the mechanical system

The capabilities of the DIAL data acquisition system (DAS) for the remote measurement of atmospheric trace gas concentrations from ground and aircraft platforms were extended through the purchase and integration of other hardware and the implementation of improved software. An operational manual for the current system is presented. Hardware and peripheral device registers are outlined only as an aid in debugging any DAS problems which may arise
